Forte Duque de Caxias & Morro do Leme Hike

Adventure · 1 Hour

Forte Duque de Caxias & Morro do Leme Hike

At the beginning of Leme Beach, where Copacabana gives way to a quieter edge of the city, a cobblestone trail disappears beneath the trees and begins its climb toward Forte Duque de Caxias.

What waits at the top is one of Rio's great short-hike rewards: a panoramic sweep across Copacabana and Leme, Sugar Loaf across the water, and Christ the Redeemer rising beyond the mountains.

The Experience

The 1.3-mile route climbs gradually through an area administered by the Brazilian Army, making this an unusually peaceful and well-contained place to explore the city on foot. Much of the walk passes beneath dense tree cover, with birds and other wildlife appearing along the way.

With about 337 feet of elevation gain, the hike is approachable for many travelers, including children accustomed to walking uphill. It offers enough of a climb to feel earned without turning into an all-day excursion.

At the summit, the trail meets Forte Duque de Caxias, adding a piece of Rio's military history to an experience that is otherwise defined by forest, coastline, and perspective.
